How to find a woody canker

Woody cankers are common problems on trees and shrubs.  A wide variety of organisms can cause them, such as: ascomycetes, basidiomycetes, oomycetes, and bacteria.

For diagnosis it is important to collect and send the area where live green tissue meets dead brown tissue.  I've put together photos and directions on how to find this area.  You can find it here: https://goo.gl/v7GE6e
