Volcano Mulch
Volcano mulching, piling mulch up onto the stem of trees in a mounded fashion, has long believed to be detrimental to tree health. Although this idea is thoroughly agreed upon in arboriculture, no research has been done to substantiate the claim. This study was set up to determine whether volcano mulch created an environment that was conducive to disease development compared to what is considered "proper" mulching, when the mulch ring has a doughnut appearance.
